The Battle: The U.S. Marines landed on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. The battle was the longest offensive ariel attack in U.S. history. The goals of the Japanese in the battle was to defend with keen ability and protect the main land Japan (which is 600 miles away from Iwo Jima). The goal for the U.S. in this battle was to gain control of the land, build an army base on the island, capture Mount Suribachi and get closer to attacking Japan.
The Japanese general in this battle was Tadamichi Kuribayashi. General Kuribayashi was a very smart man, he psyched out the U.S. military and he fought well. The U.S. Marines involved in this battle were the 3rd, 4th and 5th divisions of Marines.
The battle its self was a series of ariel attacks and bombings. Because the Japanese were all in tunnels underground it was very hard to reach them. The Japanese made an extensive amount of concrete tunnels, the volcanic rock that made up the island was very good for making concrete. The battle occurred because the U.S. wanted a military base and the Japanese wanted to defend Japan.
